GSA Sponsors 3-Day Event

GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) has announced a 3 day event will take place next week, called Ally Week, starting on Wednesday the 27th. This week is intended to reach out to the Raider community and encourage students to be more involved with clubs like this one.
On the first day (27th), GSA is hosting a Game Night in Rm. 908, in which several board games, cards, and so forth, will be set up for anybody to play. As an add-on to this event, GSA is also hoping to host a lunch casino in front of the school, consisting of 3 game tables: the first for poker, the the second for blackjack, and the third open for any requested games.
On the following day(28th), GSA is establishing a Free Hugs Day, in which students are are encouraged to hug their peers and spread the love on campus. In addition to this, GSA also is intending to host a Movie Night, in which free popcorn will be offered while the movie (Paul Blart) Mall Cop is being shown in Rm. 908.
To wrap up the week, the last day(29th) is Cross Dress Day. On this day lady raiders are encouraged to dress as guys, while the guys dress up as the ladies. Several students have already expressed anticipation for this event, announcing that they will be participating and dressing up on this day. GSA is hoping to host a Drag Race as well,in which cross dressers will be encouraged to participate, though details are still obscure on the type of race, the time, and the place to which it will be held. But GSA reassures it will be offering free pizza as it did last year, only it will be in Rm.908 this time.
GSA is looking forward to Ally Week, and invites all raiders to participate.

The Man Who had a Dream
Raiders Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day

On the third Monday of January the national holiday of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday is observed. What does this mean for us, besides a 3-day weekend? This day represents the memory of the man whose leadership, charisma, and advocation of non-violence protest allowed the modern civil rights movement to gain national momentum.
It started in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 where an organize black civil rights group set up for Rosa Parks to be arrested for refusing to move to the back of a segregated bus. This set up allowed for a wave of protesters, led by Dr. King, who was 26 at the time (being born on January 15, 1929), to boycott the Montgomery bus system.
The successful boycott led to various more demonstrations such marches and public speaking, most famous was his "I Have A Dream" speech on Washington D.C. in 1963. These demonstrations would often lead to violence from law enforcement. Despite this, Dr. King continued to support peaceful protest. In fact, Dr. King's various awards include the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.
The legacy of Dr. King's work will live on through all the advancements of minorities in this nation. Unfortunately in 1968 Dr. King was shot in a Memphis, Tennessee motel by recently escaped convict James Earl Ray. Ironically, just days earlier King had given a speech on how he was not afraid of death or any man. Due to his long and bold efforts in 1986, Congress established Martin Luther King Day in honor of his birthday (January 15).

SOH Abductions
Attemped Abductions Cause Alarm

Last Monday SOH students received a phone call at about 5:00pm informing them about an attempted abduction. According to Ms. Jaramillo, the assistant principal, the girl was returning home through Nestor Park at 3:00pm when a red truck approached her occupied by two men. The student was grabbed by these men, but was able to escape to safety by running back to school, and reporting the incident.
A similar incident occurred this past November. After a minimum day at school, a girl, also heading home, was approached by two men in a truck. They beckoned her to their car and tried to grab her. Luckily, she was able to escape.
"These two men that attempted to abduct the student last week fit the description of the two males in November," says Ms. Jaramillo, assistant principal. "Students must be warned for future attacks". These are not just random incidents so be careful, if you experience or have experienced a similar situations do not keep quiet, inform your parents and the police.

Swine Flu Vaccines
Free H1N1 vaccine shots available to all students.

This Tuesday our school is providing access for our raiders to get vaccinated for the H1N1 virus, aka, Swine Flu. Since supply is limited, these vaccines are free and available only to students of the Sweetwater District that currently are up to the age of 24, as well as their siblings who under the age of 18, and pregnant women.
Be aware that though the odds are slim, severe allergic reactions may occur to anyone. If anyone has a personal medical history or family history of allergic reactions to flu shots, do practice caution. Doctors will not be readily available, only nurses that are administering the vaccine. These nurses may or may not be readily trained to handle these allergies, so be prepared to contact a doctor if there are any difficulties breathing, increased heart rate, or sudden weakness occurs. Again, allergies are rare, but be prepared nonetheless.
Minors under the age of 18 must fill out and submit a consent form before receiving the shot. Our school nurse has these forms available, students simply need to ask for them. Administrators will be readily available to assist minors in filling these forms out, but parent signatures must also be provided.
Calls will be sent to remind families of these vaccines. Lots of planning and preparations have been made, after all keeping students healthy is the main goal.

As Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers remains perfect in Decembers. Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys remain perfectly miserable in the most important month of the regular season. San Diego won its eighth straight and is on the verge of a playoff berth. The Chargers also won their 16th straight in December, all with Rivers— and the last 11 under coach Norv Turner, whom Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided not to hire last time his head coaching job was available. He hired Wade Phillips instead, and hasn’t gotten his money’s worth in December: 3-8 after this loss, which is Dallas’ second straight. Players talked all week about wanting to win to boost his job security, but the Cowboys have now dropped consecutive games for the first time this season. They’ll carry that skid and sinking playoff hopes into a game at undefeated New Orleans on Saturday night.
Rivers bailed the Chargers out of trouble with several third-down throws and hit Antonio Gates for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, lifting San Diego to a 20-17 victory over the Cowboys that continues December trends for both clubs. hey also may not have pass-rushing star DeMarcus Ware, who sprained his neck and was taken off the field on a cart early in the fourth quarter. Rivers then hit Vincent Jackson for 39 yards and followed with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Gates.
Tomlinson’s touchdown was his 10th this season, his NFL-record-extending ninth straight year he’s hit that plateau. This one was special because it came in only the second game played in Dallas; he grew up in nearby Waco and went to college at TCU in Fort Worth. People sometimes always get the wrong gift at times such as a book they already read, or a video game they already have. Or that embarrassing holiday sweatshirt that has a "Merry Christmas" on it. There are constantly mistakes and factors you have to watch out for or you might as well buy your friend a expensive gift and give him or her the receipt. Here are some helpful tips on how to pick out the right gift for that oh so special someone:

It's that simple: stop yourself from getting the bad gift of the year. And if they don't want anything then just give them money or a gift card; you can never go wrong with a gift card and money. And remember even if you get you're friend a terrible gift they know you did it out of friendship, and it's always the thought that counts.
