SOH Abductions

Attemped Abductions Cause Alarm

by Elma Gonzalez

Last Monday SOH students received a phone call at about 5:00pm informing them about an attempted abduction. According to Ms. Jaramillo, the assistant principal, the girl was returning home through Nestor Park at 3:00pm when a red truck approached her occupied by two men. The student was grabbed by these men, but was able to escape to safety by running back to school, and reporting the incident.

A similar incident occurred this past November. After a minimum day at school, a girl, also heading home, was approached by two men in a truck. They beckoned her to their car and tried to grab her. Luckily, she was able to escape.

"These two men that attempted to abduct the student last week fit the description of the two males in November," says Ms. Jaramillo, assistant principal. "Students must be warned for future attacks". These are not just random incidents so be careful, if you experience or have experienced a similar situations do not keep quiet, inform your parents and the police.

Swine Flu Vaccines

Free H1N1 vaccine shots available to all students.
By Dwayne Codding

This Tuesday our school is providing access for our raiders to get vaccinated for the H1N1 virus, aka, Swine Flu. Since supply is limited, these vaccines are free and available only to students of the Sweetwater District that currently are up to the age of 24, as well as their siblings who under the age of 18, and pregnant women.

Be aware that though the odds are slim, severe allergic reactions may occur to anyone. If anyone has a personal medical history or family history of allergic reactions to flu shots, do practice caution. Doctors will not be readily available, only nurses that are administering the vaccine. These nurses may or may not be readily trained to handle these allergies, so be prepared to contact a doctor if there are any difficulties breathing, increased heart rate, or sudden weakness occurs. Again, allergies are rare, but be prepared nonetheless.

Minors under the age of 18 must fill out and submit a consent form before receiving the shot. Our school nurse has these forms available, students simply need to ask for them. Administrators will be readily available to assist minors in filling these forms out, but parent signatures must also be provided.

Calls will be sent to remind families of these vaccines. Lots of planning and preparations have been made, after all keeping students healthy is the main goal.

If there are any questions or concerns, contact the coordinator health services (619) 585-6020, or read a brochure on http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-inact-h1n1.pdf

Chargers 10-3

Chargers' streak continues
By Bob Chan

As Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers remains perfect in Decembers. Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys remain perfectly miserable in the most important month of the regular season. San Diego won its eighth straight and is on the verge of a playoff berth. The Chargers also won their 16th straight in December, all with Rivers— and the last 11 under coach Norv Turner, whom Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided not to hire last time his head coaching job was available. He hired Wade Phillips instead, and hasn’t gotten his money’s worth in December: 3-8 after this loss, which is Dallas’ second straight. Players talked all week about wanting to win to boost his job security, but the Cowboys have now dropped consecutive games for the first time this season. They’ll carry that skid and sinking playoff hopes into a game at undefeated New Orleans on Saturday night.

Rivers bailed the Chargers out of trouble with several third-down throws and hit Antonio Gates for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, lifting San Diego to a 20-17 victory over the Cowboys that continues December trends for both clubs. hey also may not have pass-rushing star DeMarcus Ware, who sprained his neck and was taken off the field on a cart early in the fourth quarter. Rivers then hit Vincent Jackson for 39 yards and followed with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Gates.

Tomlinson’s touchdown was his 10th this season, his NFL-record-extending ninth straight year he’s hit that plateau. This one was special because it came in only the second game played in Dallas; he grew up in nearby Waco and went to college at TCU in Fort Worth. Dallas had won five straight at its new $1.2 billion stadium since losing the first-ever game here.thegame also featured the NFL debut of a 3D, in-house video, with fans given 3D glasses as they entered

Gift Shopping Tips

Need Helping Finding Gifts?
by Robert Garcia
People sometimes always get the wrong gift at times such as a book they already read, or a video game they already have. Or that embarrassing holiday sweatshirt that has a "Merry Christmas" on it. There are constantly mistakes and factors you have to watch out for or you might as well buy your friend a expensive gift and give him or her the receipt. Here are some helpful tips on how to pick out the right gift for that oh so special someone:
  • Find what they think is interesting.
  • Ask them what they don't want.
  • Ask if they have the item you are about to buy but don't let it be obvious that you're buying them that.
  • Take them window shopping and see what catches there eye then go back later and buy it for them.

And the Most important rule of them all.

  • Ask what they want.

It's that simple: stop yourself from getting the bad gift of the year. And if they don't want anything then just give them money or a gift card; you can never go wrong with a gift card and money. And remember even if you get you're friend a terrible gift they know you did it out of friendship, and it's always the thought that counts.

Study Tips

SUHSD Tries Early Finals Schedule
by Omar Arce
It has been 17 weeks. School started over a month early on July 27, and many students did not even get a chance to enjoy the summer. Perhaps the best thing about the new school schedule is the fact that we get extra vacations: two weeks during October and an extra week for Christmas vacation. And now, only a week of regular school separates us from finals week. What this means is that it is Go time! final exams are what makes the difference between a D and C. Here are some study tips for finals:
Review the material right after class when it's still fresh in your memory.
Don't try to do all your studying the night before the test. Instead take it one section at a time.
Have all of your study material in front of you ( lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant materials).
No cell phones, or magazines or the remote.
Start out by studying the most important information. Fun facts are what they are, just fun. If they will not be in the test, do not waste memory on trivial facts.
Take short breaks frequently.
Understand the material well, don't just read through the material and try to memorize everything.
If you choose to study in a group, only study with others who are serious about the test. Not the goofball of the class, or the girl that has a massive crush on you.
Listening to relaxing music such as classical or jazz on a low volume can relieve some of the boredom of studying. But do not get all "Glee" over Calculus.

Dance

What Should We Do for New Years...?
by Elma Gonzalez

When people think of high school dances the first thing that comes to mind is Prom or Homecoming. However, this year our school has decided to offer another type of dance, one without dresses or royalty. This year SOH will honor students with perfect attendance by offering a dance next Friday, December 11. The idea came from a student. Two weeks ago Dr. Armstrong began appearing on KSOH, asking the students to think of ways to improve the school's attendance. A student submitted this idea, arguing that a good incentive could possibly do the trick. As a result, the principal, along with other administrators decided to hold this dance. "Those students who have had perfect attendance for the past two weeks will receive a special invitation," explains Dr. Armstrong. The dance will be held at the school gym from 7:00 - 9:30pm. For those who have had perfect attendance, it will be free of cost.

San Diego Football

Chargers On the Road to a Championship
By Bob Chan

Tomlinson stiff-armed Cleveland ’s Hall of Famer out of eighth place on the career rushing list and scored his 150th career TD on a 4-yard run as the Chargers won their seventh straight and 15th in a row in December, beating the Browns 30-23 on Sunday.

After Tomlinson passed Brown on an 11-yard burst up the middle in the fourth quarter, San Diego ’s running back pointed toward the 73-year-old who was sitting in a luxury suite. He patted his heart and offered a salute.

Antonio Gates set a career high with 167 receiving yards for the Chargers who dragged their cleats early and only led 13-7 at halftime. But quarterback Philip Rivers led San Diego on touchdown drives of 85 and 83 yards in just over nine minutes in the third quarter to open a 27-7 lead. Tomlinson’s TD with 5:58 left in the third put the Chargers up by 20, and placed the running back in elite company among NFL greats. Tomlinson finished with 64 yards on 20 carries and has 12,321 yards. Tony Dorsett is seventh all-time. Rivers threw two TD passes—both on short routes to running backs—as the Chargers continued their surge following a 2-3 start.

With Dallas and Cincinnati looming on the schedule, San Diego couldn’t afford to overlook the Browns who have lost seven straight amid mounting injuries. At halftime, San Diego seemed to be in trouble. At the end of the third quarter, the Chargers had little concern. San Diego thoroughly dominated the Browns in the third, outgaining Cleveland 208-10—164-0 in passing yards—while holding the ball for 12:06.

Rivers was 7 for 8 in the quarter with four completions going to Gates for 114 yards Brady Quinn threw three TD passes for the Browns, must get ready to play an angry Pittsburgh squad on Thursday. The Steelers lost at home to Oakland 27-24 on Sunday. The Browns, who had a costly turnover in the first half, made the score respectable by scoring 16 in the fourth as Quinn hit running back Jerome Harrison for two TDs. Phil Dawson’s 49-yard field goal with 39 seconds left made it 30-23, but Tomlinson recovered an onside kick with 38 seconds remaining.

Twilight is the New Black!

Is Twilight a New Sensation or a New Fad?

By Robert Garcia

Twilight has become a franchise and is now being marketed everywhere, when it comes to teeth actually drinking blood. Twilight has become more and more of a popular trend among most of the girls in schools and out of school. You do see some boys into the whole concept of 'Whom do you choose - Team Edward or Team Jacob?', but the majority is girls. Because of this new popular trend people have been getting fake teeth at Hot Topic, getting real teeth like vampires, and buying Twilight-themed items. Twilight is a growing trend that is sweeping the nation fast and quick. And the premier of the movie has only helped the marketing of Twilight-themed items. Not saying this is a bad thing it’s just we don’t want them to start drinking blood anytime soon because then things get really creepy. But just like fanny-packs Twilight- related items will some come to a close, unless they make twilight themed fanny-packs then we might all lose there.

Feeding America

New Club Aims for Charity
by Omar Arce

Thanksgiving weekend just passed. This meant that many of rejoiced in eating and shopping. Thanksgiving is probably the only holiday when gluttony and spending a gross amount of money are celebrated. It must have been fun for those of us where able to fulfill these traditions. But what about those who could not afford a meal on Thanksgiving, or go shopping on black Friday? One in eight Americans do not have access to essential food. To stop this unbelievable but true trend in the country, many organizations run programs to provide food to people in need. Feeding America is the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Most noticeable are their ads in NBC's The Biggest Loser and in the back of candy wrappers such as Snickers. Although it may seem like a program alien to San Diego, Feeding America has a branch at Southwest High. The branch was recently founded by Araceli Diaz. Raiders' Digest had the opportunity to talk to Diaz. Here is the interview:

RD: Why did you decide to start this program at SOH?
AD: I decided to begin this club at school which is already a world known international program, because I realized that hunger isn't just in the eyes of of other children or their families that are in other countries. Hunger is affecting greatly American families that are in desperate need of a simple decent meal. I want to, along with the other members and those who want to donate, to at least attempt to decrease the amount of hungry American families in the United States.

RD: How did u start it ? Where did u hear from it?
AD: I started this club like any other at school, with the mandatory paper work and with a few interested people in becoming part of it. I originally heard of this program by watching television on the show called,The Biggest Loser. Ironic though, how the show is meant for overweight people to lose weight and how the program encourages viewers to contribute with donations to feed America....

RD: Is the main goal of this club to raise money?
AD: The main goal of this club is to provide a basic decent meal to all those hungry American families that are undergoing harsh difficult times. Especially now with the rough economy. By a simple donation of one dollar, just one dollar will guarantee a family with nine pounds of food.

RD: What has the club accomplished so far?
AD: So far, the club will be collecting donations from each class (those want to be a part of this program) once a month and so on, until the end of the school year. This will continue until the end of the school year and all of the donations will be sent to the feeding America organization. Pretty soon there will be a bake sale, so we're expecting it to be a success. Every teacher has had fliers about feeding America put in their box.

RD: Any info for people interested?
AD: Anyone that is still interested can still join. It's open for anyone, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All you have to do is show up for the club meetings in room 310 every Wednesday during lunch.

RD: Who or what was your inspiration to start the program?
AD: I've always wanted to help anyone in need, anywhere from lending them a hand or helping them cross the street. But just one week ago while I was going out with my family I saw the real eyes of a hungry young child. There was a little boy and his mother begging for money just to get by through the day. I couldn't just keep on walking and ignore the poor child and his mother and not care about them. The money I had with me which I intended to spend on myself, I ended up giving it to them. I said,"here you probably need it more than I do." To me the amount of money i had was meaningless, but to them it was heaven.

RD: Any plans for the future of the program?
AD: I would like to take this program to the next level. but i want to focus right now in the present, one step at a time. i can't worry about the future if i don't even know what will happen in the next five minutes. this year will be the trial year where we will see how well we did.
Perhaps the next time you have spare change and think about putting it in a piggy bank, you will donated to Feeding America. After all, cents are the difference between a full stomach and an empty stomach.

Black Friday

Shopping spree becomes pandemonium

by Bob Chan

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States and Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employees have the day off as part of the Thanksgiving holiday with the exceptions of those employed in retail, health care, and banking. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Black Friday is usually the busiest retail shopping day of the year because of the great deals and prices that they offer

Since they have great deals such as a 40" Full HD LCD TV for only $449.00 or FIFA Soccer 10 for $34.99 with the game usually priced at $60 people are rampant and have their primal instincts kick in with a perfect example being 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a Long Island Walmart employee, was trampled to death after frenzied shoppers smashed through the store's front doors. According to police officers who arrived to perform CPR on the dying man were also stepped on and injured, as was a pregnant woman.

Curfews

Be Home By?
By Elma Gonzalez

The 10:00pm curfew has always been a nuisance for any high school student –the best parties and movies always start at 10:00pm; so why can’t they be out at that time? Well, because it is the city's way of protecting its youth.

In the 1990's curfews became a popular way to combat juvenile delinquency. But, have they helped? According to studies, curfews have had a small, positive effect on the reduction of crime among adolescents. But, what about those who are simply out for a party or movie? According to statistics, there is a higher chance of being caught in a car accident at night than during the day. Therefore, for them, it is not an issue of decreasing crime, but tragedies. Curfews have been a good way to battle both phenomena.

A week ago several SOH students were arrested for staying out past curfew. Most of these students however, were not out engaging in illegal activities,or even 'partying'; they were walking out of the movie theater after watching Twilight’s sequel: New Moon. "As we waited for my dad to come pick us up, we got hungry; so we decided to walk to Carl's Jr. That's where the cops arrested us," recalls a student.

Why would students choose to neglect the curfew? According to a survey administered to Mr. Thompson’s AP Econ class, 58% of the students know there is a curfew at 10:00pm, about 30% of the students know one exists but are unaware at what time it comes into effect, and approximately 13% did not know there was one at all. For those students who do not know there is a curfew, it is just a matter of informing them. But what can be done for those who simply choose to ignore it?

When asked, many of the students who were arrested said their parents had given them permission to be out at that hour. So, perhaps it is not a question of what can be done to the students, but to the parents. The Junior State of America club at school has decided to hold a discussion about this issue this Tuesday. They will have a guest speaker to answer any questions you may have, so show up and let your opinion be heard.

The AP Then and Now

AP classes provide open access
by Martin Zazueta

Now most of the students at Southwest High school may not remember how someone was to get enrolled in an AP class in past years; in fact only the class of 2010 should have a first hand memory of how it used to be. Nowadays one can just sign up for just about any AP class they want (probably the most obvious exception being AP Calculus) and depending if there's room (or in some cases it doesn't matter) and they can enroll in the class. The way it used to be was that a student had to sign an AP contract that required both a parent signature and two teacher recommendations, the contract would state that you were aware of the rigor that comes from AP and that it was considered a college level course and were expected to conduct as such. It also used to be that to get out of AP would also require several parent meetings with both the counselor and the teacher, student with counselor conferences, and the process at the very least would take about two weeks. Now it's just a word with your counselor and you can get out almost at will.

AP may no longer have the same prestige it had before, with so many students filling up the AP classes (except for Science and Math), many of whom are not prepared for it or are just simply do not understand the dynamics of it. by not taking it seriously, it has created a form of lagging that may be impeding the growth of students.

This growing concept of letting more students into AP is colloquially known as "Open Access" or "Open Enrollment" which has the noble purpose of allowing students to grow and expand themselves academically, by letting those who want to take the extra mile to try it, and not just leave those for the ones who are already prepared for it. This idea embodies the core purpose of education of getting someone to make progress. But the reality is that a lot of students do not really grasp the idea that AP is supposed to be for students who are willing and wanting to take the extra mile: an example of this is that several AP students continuously lag in participation with little regard to try to progress despite how much a teacher tries to get them to do otherwise. Also there have been occasions when a teacher has said that "you wont get crossword puzzles in college, you should be doing essays" a student replied "well this isn't a college class". Despite the problems with Open Access, all the aspects are too much to deal with in a single article. More on this next week.

Chargers vs. Chiefs

Bolts Have Six Game Streak

by Bob Chan

The Chargers have won six in a row since starting 2-3 including that loss to then 5-0 Broncos but look how the tides have turned with the chargers surging back to first place in the AFC west. The Chief’s were horrible in this game where the chargers defense had forced four turnovers. Tomlinson began the day 12th on the all-time list with 12,218 yards. He passed Marcus Allen and Edgerrin James for 10th place with him eyeing Marcus Allen and Marshall Faulk. Tomlinson had 39 yards on 13 carries, giving him 12,257 for his career. Rivers was 21 of 28 for 317 yards, with no interceptions, for a rating of 135.6.

Cornerback Quentin Jammer had an interception and forced a fumble, and Brandon Siler and rookie Larry English also recovered fumbles. The most spectacular play was Oliver's. Matt Cassel dropped back and cocked his arm to throw late in the second quarter and the ball slipped out of his hand. Oliver grabbed it in the air, bobbled it, gained control, turned and ran 40 yards into the end zone to give the Bolts a 28-7 lead.

The Chief’s fourth turnover came early in the third quarter when a shotgun snap went over Cassel's head on third-and-1 from the Chiefs 31 and was recovered by English at the 10. Tomlinson scored on a 3-yard run two plays later to make it 35-7. Gates had seven catches for 118 yards. Chris Chambers, who people thought could be the X-factor didn’t live up to expectations was released by the Chargers a month ago and quickly signed by KC, caught a 7-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter. Backup QBs Billy Volek of San Diego and Brodie Croyle of KC came in late in the game. Next up for the Chargers are the 1-10 Browns and for the Chief's, well they have the 7-4 Broncos.

New Moon Review

Expected Hit Disappointing?

by Robert Garcia

New Moon opened on Friday at midnight. The midnight showing earned a total of $26.3 Million dollars on the first showing of the film. But overall New Moon had earned more on the first showing of The Dark Knight, Unlike the The Dark Knight, New Moon is for die hard fans who want to watch Bella (Kristine Stewart) cry and mope around for 2 hours and only to scream while Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is in the movie 90% of the time with his shirt off. Now if you’re a die hard fan for Twilight Saga you will have already have seen this movie most likely and had given it a A++, but if you’re someone is somewhat of a fan because of the cute boys running around the movie playing vampire and werewolf then you most likely will give this a B. If you’re just someone who goes out and sees any big movie or is forced out with friends then most likely a C-. Don’t get me wrong as someone who saw the movie and can appreciate good acting Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black) did that, while Kristine Stewart (Bella) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) failed to bring their characters to life and give you that personal connection that some actors have on making you feel sad when the character feels sad and happy when they’re happy. Personally I found Bella and Edwards acting hollow and had no real emotion when they had to give that audience the grief of missing your loved one.

Overall, the movie in my opinion gets a C- on rating while others may differ. I found the movie Twilight to be a lot more enjoyable than New Moon.

Coffee House

Raiders Perform on El Dia de Revoluccion
by Elma Gonzalez

November 20th is a memorable date in Mexico; it celebrates Mexico's revolution against the dictatorship of President Porfirio Diaz.

As in other years, MEChA chose this date to celebrate its annual Coffee House. Coffee House is an event- fundraiser in which students have the opportunity to display their talents.
This year, the audience had to pay two dollars and 3 cans or five dollars to enter. Why? Well, many students are not aware of what MEChA really does; mostly they think being part of the club consists of preparing assemblies, or selling 'tostilocos' at the food fair. However, the club is involved with charity organizations, among them an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico, for which the Coffee House was conducted. Every single can fundraised at the event goes toward this institution.

The show was held last Friday, and it was definitely a success. There was more than 15 performances, most of which were singing acts. There were also two 'stand-up-comedy' acts, a dancing act, and a guitar playing act. Students, parents, teachers, alumni, and even the principal showed up to show support to all of our talented students.

Although every act was wonderful, there were some that were unexpectedly amazing. A cover of "Only Hope" from the A Walk to Remember soundtrack, sung by Raquel Plateros almost brought the audience to tears. "Angel" (the Yuridia version) was beautifully sung by Marcos Alamillo. Monica Moreno sang "We belong together". Tiara Mancilla did a cover of "Huellas" by Ximena Sarinana that brought music to our very souls.
If you missed out this year make sure to attend next year; for you never know what may be performed!!

SOH Blood Drive

Starve a Vampire, Save 3 Lives
by Robert Garcia

On Friday November 20, 2009 at Southwest High School held its twice yearly blood drive hosted by the Red Cross. The blood drive offers community service and a t-shirt if you donate blood or try to donate blood. Many people went in with the slogan "Starve a Vampire, Donate Blood" being ironic for the purpose that Twilight New Moon had premiered that day. Many students in school donated as well. All lot of new student this year and a few teachers, and parents came to donate blood for the first time. In order to donate blood they had to make sure you were a "Safe Donor" followed by a interview and a small blood sample that checked if your blood was safe to use. After the interview donors were sent to a bed where they lay back and the professionals began to take their blood by sticking a needle in their vein. The whole blood-drawing process depended on the person's blood flow, but overall the new people who were nervous came out satisfied and realized it was not as bad as they though it would be. After people had donated blood they relaxed in the refreshment area where donors were served snacks and drank juice or water. In the end, people donated and lives are going to be saved. And to those who wanted to donate but couldn't because of reasons of not getting the permission slip signed, there will be another one next semester.

Fall Sports Recap

Fall is Over, Now on to Winter
by Bob Chan

Can you believe it? a third of the school year has already passed and so has the fall sports. This year there was six sports during this season, Boys' Football, Boys' Water Polo were for guys only. The football team this year was led by Lamar Weston as the quarterback and had Marcus Gladden, David Leon, and Marus Boldridge as Lamar’s primary receivers. This year had high expectations with new coach Mike Esposito taking charge of the team. It was a disappointing season but did have its high point when we won the Golden Shovel in the "Battle of the 905" between us and San Ysidro high 35- 8. We finished 1-11 which was an improvement from last year. The Boy’s water polo was led by a batch of new players and also by Coach Carson. The team went 3-7 and had a schedule that faced a lot of tough teams such as Mar Vista and Spring Valley. Top players were sophomore Jesus Lopez and Senior Luis Vasquez.

The sports this year for girls were tennis, golf and volleyball. The tennis team had ended their season with second place trailing the Olympian Eagles. It had players ranging from sophomores such as Yasmin Garcia to juniors like Joy Roxas and also seniors like Brenda Pitogo. The girls' golf team had a young team, who was led by senior team captain Elma Gonzalez. They had finished second in their league only finishing behind the Sweetwater Red Devils. In the individual playoffs we had seven SOH girls who were among the top twelve golfers in the league which include senior and team captain Elma Gonzalez, freshmen Alison Lawyer, freshmen Valerie Rodriguez, junior Grisela Robles, sophomore Maria Bojorquez, sophomore Teresa Romero-Medina, and freshmen Yunueth Jimenez. The girl’s' volleyball team had ended the season with a record of nine victories and three losses, in second place of the Southbay League. The final game of the season showed how dominant we were with a clean sweep against the Red Devils. The Lady Raiders then went off to the playoffs against La Jolla for their final match of the year.

The final sport was a coed one that started in July and ended after four long and grueling months. The "X"-Country Team was lead by newspapers very own Omar Arce and had science teacher Mr. Buse as a coach as well as others. The JV boy’s team and varsity girls had both finished in third place and also show a bright future with sophomore’s Yessenia Baylon and Andrew Palacios. With this season over we’ll be looking forward to the winter sport’s where we can hope to find as much success that we found in the fall.

Red Ribbon Week

Raiders show spirit in support of drug free lifestyle
By Dwayne Codding

This last week, Southwest High Raiders took part in the national event Red Ribbon Week by dressing up on given days and showing their support. Many raiders came to school in their PJ's, their workout out attire, and even their crazy socks, but most importantly, wore red ribbons to represent the promise to live drug free. A poster, signed by a vast number of Raiders showed the overall impact of the event, as they expressed their rejection to drugs. Countless ribbons decorated the front gate, each tied by a student promising to live free of drugs, and overall urging others to do the same.

But did the message reach anybody? What do our Raiders have to say in respect to this event?
“I think it was run pretty well. The school got involved” said Rebekah Castellow, “We celebrated a week of being drug free and set an example of how we should be living a drug free life.”

“To me it appeared as if it had lost some of its 'seriousness'.” stated Anaiz Alegria, “I felt as if the message got lost in the activities. I've always found red ribbon week to be important. But the thing that was bugging me was how many people probably broke that vow or won't accept it. A lot of people don't take it serious and it sucks.” Anaiz further elaborated, explaining that people can care, intend on being drug free, even take the pledge, yet still take drugs. Self control can be difficult, especially after having been exposed to the drugs. In the end, she admitted the events sent a good message.

“I think dressing up was a cool idea because I see that in our school most students support events like this one when it involves activities.” added Kim Mendez, “It met my expectations and I think we should have more events like this one!”

Kim then suggested that we should have more events promoting drug free lifestyles, since as Anaiz pointed out, “We are in high school and a lot of the morals and characteristics that we develop stays with us. Being responsible about things like drinking and taking certain medications should be something we learn now.”
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT RED RIBBON WEEK? Speak out and be heard!

Green Living Project

Students Learn About Eco-friendly Projects
by Martin Zazueta

All over the world the "Green" Revolution is taking people to realize that we need to take care of this planet. Across the world green projects are being executed in order to help preserve key areas of the world's ecosystem. These projects are designed so that the people living in these areas do not have to worry about financial worries because they incorporate ways to make a living off these projects.

The main focus of the presentations was on projects of South America. These projects included the installment of a zipline across a canyon to attract tourists so the owner of the land would not have to sell the land for development, and intervention of groups like the Amazon Conservation Association which helped to make sure that the Brazil nut, trees which can only grow in certain areas of the rain forest, that many people rely on as a stable crop can be preserved and replenish.

Now, wherever these projects pop-up the organization Green Living Project is there to record it and work with the people there to help the locals work together in bringing awareness of the environmental issues concerning people making an everyday living off of nature so they can manage to make sure that it can be kept safe. One of their missions is to let the whole world about these efforts and last week thats exactly what they did at Southwest high. A group of about 50 Eco-engineering students paid close attention to what the presenters had to say about the environment and the work people are doing to preserve it. If you are interested in learning more about these environmental efforts or you would like to see the videos that were shown to the other SOH students, please go to http://www.greenlivingproject.com/ or you can follow them on Facebook at http://www.greenlivingproject.com/facebook. Chris DeGuzman injured in game
by Omar Arce

The battle for the bell: it is more than a game, it is a war, a war where only two outcomes are possible, "leave that field with the bell, or on a stretcher" as said by Senior Cris De Guzman. De Guzman left the field in a stretcher during the middle of the third quarter."...I was injured on an inside run, where I was tackled at the legs, and then the front, and then being piled on, causing my spine to bend backwards: the worst pain I have EVER felt in my life. My lower back went numb and I thought I was paralyzed, I tried getting up but the pain was too much." recalls De Guzman. The paramedics took him to, Paradise Valley Hospital. Coincidentally, he spent the rest of the night in the hospital where he was born. In a sport where spinal injuries are a constant threat, De Guzman is lucky to be walking, "The doctor said my spine should be fine, no broken bones or anything, but my lower back muscles were still badly sprained," explained De Guzman.
About the game, De Guzman says:"... I'm still pretty disappointed that there was a lack of heart in the team as a whole; tho few of us played our hearts out, those who didn't cost us the game." But in a situation, like this one Football is just a game. http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3Lmt1c2kuY29tL3Bwci9oendlZWsxMS82OTkyNDAzMi5odG1sP3ZpZGVvPXBvcCZ0PWE=

Girls' Golf Conclusion

Low Scores Are a Good Thing!
By Elma Gonzalez

Golf season is finally over, and it couldn't have been better. With four freshmen, two sophomores, a junior, and one senior, the team was diverse and complete. They were able to beat all but one team in the league, the SUH Devils.

Although, the ladies only received the second place title as a team, in the individual metro-championship, they placed in the highest spots. Seven out of the eight players got "First or Second Team All League" recognition. What this means is that seven SOH girls were among the top twelve golfers in the league. These include: senior- and team captain- Elma Gonzalez, freshmen Alison Lawyer, freshmen Valerie Rodriguez, junior Grisela Robles, sophomore Maria Bojorquez, sophomore Teresa Romero-Medina, and freshmen Yunueth Jimenez. In fact, SOH had the most players place in "First or Second Team All League."
Right under an OLY, Elma Gonzalez placed third. First place winner, Briana, from SUH, went on to represent the South Bay League at CIF.

In the end, although the team's victories were scarcely announced at school, the girls golf team had their best season in years. The Lady Raiders represented the school very well this year, and Coach Sean Seibel assures that with all the experience the girls acquired this year, they will do even better next season.

Mar Vista Vs Southwest

SOH battles for the bell

by Robert Garcia

The bell game, is one in which Mar Vista and Southwest both compete for a bell. This game is where the rival schools duke it out to see who can be the one on top. The Bell Game 's final score was 45 Mar Vista and 0 on Southwest. The football team tried their best and gave it their all. The only thing the score says is that Mar Vista was better that day. Given another day it could have been different. Even though the bell wasn't Southwest at the end, no Raider ever stopped cheering and in the end they lifted their heads up and were happy that they had tried to win the bell back. The band itself never once dropped a note, and was not disapointed in their football team because they gave it their all! Sergio Vargas stated, "I believe that the football team this year did above average strives to achieve their goal, and in the end they achieved the same amount of effort they put into glory".

All that's left to be said is: Maybe Next Year!

Cross Country Finals

Raider runners go the extra mile
by Omar Arce

It started in July and now it is about to end. The South-bay league Cross Country finals were run Friday. The course: Bonita's Rohr Park, probably the fastest course that Southwest High ran this season. The weather was at a comfortable 65 F: good weather and fast course. This could only mean that some personal records were about be broken and perhaps some medals could be won.

It was awkward to have a small team on the last meet. The Boys' Varsity team remained untouched but the Boys' JV had only 5 runners to compete. The Girls' varsity team only had 4 runners to compete. The most noticeable absence was Captain Cassandra Palacios, who was sick during the whole week.

In the Boys' Varsity race, Sophomore Andrew Palacios ran a personal record ine the 3.1 mile race in a time of seventeen minutes and 44 seconds that got him int sixth place of the race , awarding him a medal.

In the Boys' JV race Senior Alan Valdovino ran the same race in a time of 20 minutes and 3 seconds. Valdovino ran personal record. Only 3 seconds away from breaking 20 minutes. This time got him a medal for 8th place in the Southbay League.

The girls race was led by Sophomore Yessenia Baylon. Although she did not place in the top 10, she ran a great race.

So after 4 months and about 400 miles run the season came to and end, with the Boys' Varsity team finished the season in sixth place. The Boys' JV team, finished in third place, and the Girls' Varsity team finished third as well.

Basketball Season is coming!

Getcha Head in the Game
by Bob Chan

It’s that time of year again where fall sports fade away and in comes the winter sports. One of the sports that you can try out for is basketball. It is a team sport in which two teams of 5 players try to score points against one another by placing a ball through a 10 foot hoop under organized rules. Points are scored by shooting the ball through the basket from above. Dunking and slamming the ball into the rim, the team with more points at the end of the game wins. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center or one of two forward positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed, play the guard positions. While competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport, played on a basketball court, less regulated variations played in the outdoors have become increasingly popular among both inner city and rural groups.

The Southwest High Raiders won the South Bay League last year sporting an undefeated record in their league while having a 19-8 record playing north and east county powerhouses. The varsity coach is headed by Mr. Selland who also is the AP government teacher while the junior varsity is headed by Coach Dario Ramirez who played for the school from 1998-2002 and last but not least coach David who coached the Junior varsity team last year but now is teaching the freshman. Tryouts were November 14th with the lady raiders auditioning from 10:00 am to 12:00 am. Varsity tryout was from 12:00 am to 2:00pm and JV and freshmen from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. finishing off this article I will leave you with a quote made by the coaches during practice “Southwest high WORKS HARDER than any other school”.

Royal Raider Regiment!

Parade and Field!

by Robert Garcia

Most of the Royal Raider Regiment (also known as the "Southwest High School Marching Band") had their first parade and field show competition on Saturday. Nervous and wondering : will they rise up to the challenge? They all had butterflies in their stomachs. All week, just days before field show and parade, the band had been practicing and working on their music and field show. As the time to "Judgment Day" approached, most of the veterans who have already done field shows and parades were worried. Would they be ready? On Thursday the band had to make a very tough choice. "Do they go?" Many of them could not get through their 3rd movement of the field show. But they came to the fact that they are going to work hard on Friday. When Friday practice rolled around everyone had been working endlessly to get down their 3rd movement piece and they did. At the end of Friday practice the choice was made - they would go.

Saturday the Royal Raider Regiment members woke up around 3:00 in the morning to make call time by 4:00. As the band members arrived tired but ready, and loaded the bus and headed out. As they were running late, they arrived ready to do what they came to accomplish. They made their way to the field. Only having a 1-3 minutes of warm-up from running late, they weren't fully warmed up. First Movement began in a flash and they did all right. But as second Movement approached it came crashing to a hault. But, being Raiders, they didn't give up they tried and didn't do well, but it was good considering the fact that they only had one minute preparation. At the end of the field show everyone was discouraged because they didn't do their best. But Mrs.Clark stated that she wasn't ashamed of them. And neither were any of their coaches because they lifted their heads high and knew when it came down to the next one they will do better! Overall, the day continued with their Parade and they enjoyed each other's company and did really well on the parade! Everyone enjoyed Chino, and even though they didn't do their best in the Field Show they all had fun being part of the band and had nothing to be ashamed about!

ROP

Career Pathways show off our school
by Elma Gonzalez
Last Friday, the ASB, Band, Color guard, Cheerleaders, and ROP teachers and students woke up early in the morning to 'show off' our school to Fox News. But 'show off' what exactly, you may wonder? Unfortunately, not many students know about our school's many assets.

One of them - also the main reason for Fox News' visit- is our ROP program. SOH is one of the few schools in the county with classes like Culinary Arts and Autoshop. In fact, according to Dr. Armstrong, "We are the ONLY school in the county with 'state-of-the-art' equipment for these classes".

What does this mean? Well, SOH culinary arts class not only has the best pots and pans, but convection ovens that bake cookies in ten minutes, and video cameras that zoom in to the teacher's every move so that students know which cutting method is best for a given recipe. Autoshop has machines that lift up cars so that they can be looked at from every angle, and tools used in a professional auto repair shops. Yes, our ROP program is the best there is.

Are we the only school with ROP classes? Ms. Mesa, Culinary Arts teacher, explains that almost all schools in the district have them. However, the ROP coordinators focus only on one or two different programs per school. For example, at SOH we have the best Culinary Arts and Autoshop classes; at Olympian, they have the best Audio Technology class equipment.

Sometimes SOH students are so busy complaining about the bad things, that they forget about what makes our school unique. Joshua Brown, ASB president stated during his Fox News interview that what set our school apart was that we were “…the most spirited”. However, it is more than just being the school that screams the loudest; programs such as the above-mentioned, and others in the Bio-medical field offered here give students the preparation they need to go to college or to jump into work field. In the end, maybe we should thank Fox News for coming to remind us we have much to ‘show off’.

Lady Raider Volleyball completes successful season
by Omar Arce

Last Friday the SOH women's Volleyball team played their last home game. Their opponent was the Sweetwater Red Devils. The game started with a brief ceremony recognizing the senior members of the team. Despite the brief moment of celebration, the Lady Raiders came out focused to play. In less than 10 minutes the Lady Raiders had an advantage of 18-4 in the first set with a lineup dominated by seniors. Sweetwater attempted to make a comeback with an 8 point streak. To stop the streak the Raider coaches, Mike Alviz and John Baino called for a timeout. This certainly helped, because as soon as the game resumed SOH scored. The Lady Raiders eventually won the first set 25-20 with a service error from Sweetwater.

The Lady Raiders started the second set with less seniors giving a chance to the other underclassmen to play. Nonetheless, they played as good as their senior counterparts. The Red Devils tried to win this set, obtaining a one point advantage of 13-12, but the Lady Raiders overcame the situation and won the second set.

It was the third set and the Lady Raiders only needed one more set to win the game. It looked easy, according to the previous sets, to win the third set. But it was not. The Red Devils won the first point and tried to cling to a 1-point advantage throughout the firs half of the set. But little did they know that the Raiders would overcome the deficit and finish the game in the third set with a kill by Denisse Atualevao, who was the only player to play the three sets continuously.

With this victory, SOH finishes the season with a record of nine victories and three losses, in second place of the Southbay League. The Lady Raiders will start their voyage into the play offs Tuesday November 10 at La Jolla

Zinch.com

Be More Than Just a Test Score
by Martin Zazueta

When applying to college and conducting scholarship searches students may feel that they are unjustly being over judged on their GPA and SAT/ACT scores. This can be very frustrating because many students know or feel that they have more potential than what just a few numbers can say.

However, those students need fear no more for there exists a website whose motto is: "I'm More Than Just a Test Score". This website is called Zinch.com and it is a sort of combination of Facebook and Scholarship.com. Here students can make an account to help fill out an academic and social profile in which they will be given a chance to show their full potential to universities. The website is filled with chances to show off your student accomplishments. Any clubs and sports you've participated in, any award/honor you've received or community service activities can be and are encouraged to be included in your student profile. Zinch even has a spot for student work called "Talent Show": here students can submit any essays, poetry, videos, and pictures that they would like colleges to see (try doing that on Scholarships.com).

The bread and butter of Zinch is that most colleges are actively using the site to search for potential students. Even better yet students can send "shout outs" to the universities that they are interested in receiving more information from those colleges which, in turn, can then review the student's awesome profile. Also Zinch takes all the information from the students profile and uses it to find scholarships whose criteria matches the student's profile. You might say that Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com but the fact is that Zinch will list for you most of the same scholarships that the other websites will list and even more scholarships that are rarely seen in other places.

So, don't delay any longer, students if you are going to spent hours online, instead of updating your myspace profile go make a Zinch profile at http://www.zinch.com/ to start finding scholarships and connecting with colleges.

World Series

Yankees Do It Again!
by Bob Chan

Paint the town in pinstripes! Nearly a decade after their dynasty ended on a blooper in the desert, the New York Yankees are baseball's best again. Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night, finally seizing that elusive 27th title — the most in all of sports. It was the team's first since winning three straight from 1998-2000. Matsui, the Series MVP, powered a quick rout of old foe Pedro Martinez. And when Mariano Rivera got the final out, it was ecstasy in the Bronx for George Steinbrenner's go-for-broke bunch. What a way for Alex Rodriguez and Co. to christen their $1.5 billion ballpark: One season, one championship. It certainly ended a lot better than it started — with a steroids scandal involving A-Rod, followed by hip surgery that kept him out until May.

For Chase Utley and the Phillies, it was a frustrating end to another scintillating season. Philadelphia fell two wins short of becoming the first NL team to repeat as World Series champions since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. Utley tied Reggie Jackson's record with five home runs in a Series. But Ryan Howard's sixth-inning homer came too late to wipe away his World Series slump, and Phillies pitchers rarely managed to slow Matsui and the Yankees' machine. Steinbrenner spent billions trying to win another Series. At long last, his team did.Fittingly, it was dedicated to the 79-year-old owner, who has been in declining health and didn't make the trip from his home in Tampa , Fla.

For the Four Amigos, it was ring No. 5. Jorge Posada, Jeter, Pettitte and Rivera came up together through the minors and were cornerstones for those four titles in five years starting in 1996. Playing perhaps his final game with the Yankees, Matsui hit a two-run homer off Martinez in the second inning and a two-run single on an 0-2 pitch in the third.A designated hitter with balky knees, Matsui came off the bench in all three games at Philadelphia . Still, he had a huge Series, going 8 for 13 (.615) with three homers and eight RBIs. His go-ahead shot off an effective Martinez in Game 2 helped the Yankees tie it 1-all. Matsui's big hits built a comfortable cushion for a feisty Pettitte, who shouted at plate umpire Joe West while coming off the field in the fourth. Still, Pettitte extended major league records with his 18th postseason win and sixth to end a series.

It had been nearly a half-century since players had won five titles with one team. The last to do it? Of course a bunch of Yankees: Yogi Berra (10 titles), Mickey Mantle (seven) and Whitey Ford (six) in 1962, according to STATS LLC. For second-year manager Joe Girardi, a three-time Yankees champion as a player, it was the fulfillment of a mission. When he succeeded Joe Torre in October 2007, Girardi chose uniform No. 27, putting his quest on his back for all to see.

"Its What You do After High School"

Get Ready for College!!!
By Elma Gonzalez

As I sit here trying to figure out how to begin my "personal Statement" I realize how ridiculous they are. You are given 500 words to jam your whole life experiences - or at least the highlights. In those 4 paragraphs, you are supposed to sound successful yet not cocky. And in the end everyone looks for something that will engage the reader, a unique experience - which happens to be the same unique experience another 5,000 people have.

Despite all this, this seemingly insignificant autobiography is key to our success. As many us know, the world today is very different from the one 60 or even 50 years ago. For the majority of the twentieth century in America, most work available was manual labor (ie: factory work). But now, with our recent improvement in technology, there is no more room in the factory for human error. Most factories have machines doing at least half the work. So where does this leave us? High School students today are less likely to find a job without a college diploma.

In other words, although personal statements may seem like an absurd attempt from universities to get to know you, that is not the point; the most important thing now is that you sit down and do it!!!! Those 500 words may be the difference between going to college or flipping burgers at McDonalds.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, before and after school, counselors assist students with their 'personal statement.' Most English teachers spend class time to help students with this. So there is no excuse. As Mr. Leaf once said, "It is only the rest of your life!"

"O'er the Horizon of VICTORY"

Pigskin Loosing Streak is Over!
by Omar Arce

Two years, two long years passed since the SOH Football team had won a game. With Halloween on the horizon, the Raiders hoped to have the ghosts of the past winning teams on their side and defeat the San Ysidro Cougars. Two things were at stake: the first victory of the season and the golden shovel. Yes the golden shovel, a new rivalry has begun. "The battle of the 905."

The Raiders got the lead in the first quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Henry Miranda and a 48-yard touchdown run by David Leon. This gave the Raiders a 14-0 advantage over the Cougars. During the second quarter David Leon received a 14-yard pass from Lamar Weston, to increase the lead to 21-0. The Raiders went to halftime, and the fans were stoked. It looked liked there was a chance a real chance to win.

The Raiders came back to the second half to magnify their lead over the Cougars. Pierre Davis increased the lead with 7-yard touchdown run. With a score of 28-0 the Cougars finally reacted with a 57-yard reception by Asante Yarbrough who would take the 2-point conversion to change the score to 28-8. In the last quarter David Leon scored in a 82-yard punt return in the most spectacular play of the game. It was the just the icing on the cake. The final score was 35-8, allowing the Raiders to have the Golden Shovel for the first time ever.

So after two years and 17 games, the winning-less drought ended for the Raiders.

Here is a video of the highlights of the game.

Celebrating Coming Out Day

Raiders are "Letting it Show"
By Dwayne Codding

A typical Tuesday in Southwest High, students minded their own business, heading out for lunch as usual. To their surprise though, things seemed rather odd as they passed by the gym where an event seemed to be taking place.“There was music,” remembers fellow Raider Sergio Vargas, “a door asking to be opened...Once opened, a Limbo obstacle appeared and I just had to pass it and know whether I was able to... or not”

Out in the open, standing on a frame alone, was a door, labeled as “The Closet”. A sound system was set up behind it playing an assortment of tunes. In front of the door, people held a pole midair prepared for Limbo for anyone interested in participating. A crowd gathered to observe, discovering GSA was hosting a national event called “Coming Out Day”.

Basically students were being encouraged by the club to simply walk through the door, and limbo past the pole in order to win free rainbow ribbons.

Out in front Marie Johnson held the microphone, inviting everyone to join in the action and motivating the crowd to participate. “We're just asking you to go through a door.” Marie would say, “Nothing hard there, you do it everyday when you leave home, and here we're giving you free ribbons to walk through a door. Now tell me if that isn't awesome!”

The event had a slow start, being started off by members of the club before others felt comfortable enough to participate. Soon Raiders joined in the action, going through the door alone or in groups, soon it seemed like everyone was going through the door and having a good time. A Limbo competition took place, and the winners that got lower than Carpizo won free bracelets.
“It was an ingenious event!” said Sergio, “it was far more interactive than any of the other events at school thus far”

Many seem to agree the event was a great success for the most part. But some criticisms still arise, even from club members.

“Our DJ's were terrible,” admitted Anaiz Alegria, Vice President of the GSA, “partly because we had a new one at least every couple of minutes and partly because there was a new song every 30 seconds. The microphone was being hogged by someone that might possibly have been scaring the potential volunteers away. The limbo part was not the way I was hoping it would be. It turned out to be a go-through-the-door-and underneath-the-stick thing. The contest was not even a contest. At least not in my definition. So to me, it was a let down. But luckily I noticed how some people were in fact enjoying the event. It looked like half of the people there enjoyed it. The students volunteering looked like they were having a good time. So yay!”

“I think it turned out nice.” said Arely Sanchez, another GSA member, “When I really think about it, students are nice in our school; at least they let us do what we had to do. We didn't have to worry about any bad attitudes or discrimination. Like I'm sure other schools can be more religious or conservative and might have students whom wouldn't just sit down and let us have it. They would complain or bully students. Overall though i think the event was something simple and nice.”

In short, the day was a pleasant break from the routine day to day lives of raiders here on campus. After being asked what he thought about the event, Sergio responded, “I would just say that I feel sorry for anyone who didn't participate in the event and did not live the thrill of going through a door and Limbo-ing in front of other students”

WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE EVENT? Speak out and make your opinion heard.

Halloween Origins

Behind the holiday
by Bob Chan

Well, it’s that time of year again where we go out and get free candy. Halloween is an annual festival celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. Most people do various activities, which include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. There are many things in San Diego such as going to the Haunted Trails in Balboa Park or going to the movies and watching Paranormal Activity or Saw 6.

Even U.S. President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on Saturday doled out presidential M&Ms and dried fruit mixes to more than 2,000 trick-or-treaters, marking their Halloween at a White House event. Mrs. Obama wore furry cat ears and a leopard-patterned top. Mr. Obama said the kids looked adorable, as well as his wife, “a very nice looking Catwoman.”

I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween

Mysterious Creatures, Ghost, and Other Paranormal Experiences!
By: Robert Garcia

Ever walk home one day and notice a big bird in the sky that you have never seen before and not the pigeons that you see sometimes around school campus. I’m talking about a huge bird that can carry you away. Or maybe at the corner of your eye you catch a glimpse of some weird figure but the second you turn your head it disappears. Well, there are a lot of skeptics out there that don’t believe in paranormal activity or creatures yet to be discovered. But popular T.V shows such as Ghost Hunters And Destination Truth Believe that somewhere there lives big foot or a ghost. My question other there for you readers of Raiders Digest Blog is: Have you ever experienced weird encounters with a ghost, or some strange mystical creature and if so where and when? And what do you think it was or what was it?

Now, some of you may be saying, “No Way! I don’t want to be made fun of or be called weird!” But here is the catch: if you send us an email of your story it will be confidential and we will just post your story and not your name! Hey, you don’t even have to send us your name. Just make the story school appropriate!

Just send it to us at sohnews@yahoo.com!

Story 1
It's a Plane! No! What is it?!

"Well, one day when I was walking home from school. I noticed something at the corner of my eye it was a shadow of something big! It was a bird. Except for this bird didn't look like something you see usually in California. This one really huge It made one loud sound and it was like a screeching noise. I remember being really scared and began to shake because what ever it was had big claws on it's feet and I knew it could most likely kill me. I started to run home and I noticed that the bird kept on my tail from the shadow. Luckily for me I got to my house before it got me, but after that day I never saw it again. And just my luck no camera"

Story 2
That is no Casper!

"When I was home alone on a typical Saturday night, while watching TV, I began to hear some moaning sound. It sounded like something was in pain. Not knowing what it was really scared me. But being the man that I am I had to investigate to protect the house. As I got up and turned on the lights to the hallway the power to the house turned off and I was left in complete dark. I started to feel very cold all of a sudden, and then I heard a whisper really close to my ear like someone trying to whisper something in it and it said "Get out." And I turned around and saw nothing and the lights went back on and that was the last time I heard it or felt that cold."

Halloween Dance

SAC students celebrate Halloween
By Dwayne Codding

Last Friday night was a very important night for some raiders here on campus. Our school hosted a Halloween dance for the Special Abilities Cluster(SAC) students, this now being the 8th SAC dance held in our school.

The Special Abilities Cluster is a comprehensive, integrated program meeting the needs of students with developmental disabilities. SAC's mission statement is to add a meaningful dimension to the lives of students who are developmentally disabled by providing opportunities for socialization and recreation experiences within the community.* So this program provides the educational, recreational, and social opportunities for this group of students.

This dance was held in the girls' adaptive room from 9:30 to 11:30 on Friday, and it involved students from various schools in our southern neighborhood. This included Mar Vista Middle and High, Montgomery Middle and for the first time ever, Montgomery High. Also, beyond high school and middle school students, transition(graduates at ages 19-22) students are invited as well.

These events are eagerly looked forward to, since SAC students meet together mostly through parties like this one, as well as picnics and other events. Otherwise they only really see each other during summer school, and that can be a long wait!

Latino Summit

"Gather up and learn, about Latinos, and education!"
by Elma Gonzalez

For more than a century the Latino population has been important part of California's community. The number of Latin immigrants to the United States has increased; as a result the number of Latin students enrolled in California schools -specially in southern California- has increased considerably. Despite this growth, the number of them who graduate and go to college has not seen a significant increase. But why? With Latino students making up almost half of the student population in CA, the San Diego County Chicano Federation (SDCCF) formed a committee to answer this question. They began by monitoring the educational progress of the Latino youth in the SD Unified school district. In 1982, SDCCF held an educational summit at SDSU to identify "points of concern regarding the low academic achievements" of Latino students. In 1997, they held another summit to revise these points. The result was the establishment of the SD County Latino Coalition on Education.

Since then, the coalition has directed 14 Latino Summits in San Diego with the goal of improving Latino Academic Achievement. Alberto Ochoa, a member of the committee that organizes the event, explains that the primary goals are "...to create awareness through statistics, to close the achievement gap between Latino students and white students, and to increase the academic rigor in classes offered to Latino students."

Although SOH students attend the summit as spectators every year, it was not until last October 17 that more than twenty SOH MEChA students led by Ms. Flores took part in this year's summit by presenting information and expressing their opinions to over 200 students, parents, teachers, and administrators. At the summit, important figures in our community spoke about the barriers Latino students face; they explained possible reasons and solutions for these obstacles; and they called the community to action by encouraging them to support the Latino in acquiring a college education. The event proceeded to workshops in which students were able directly to express their opinion on conflicts faced by Latino students today. Some students narrated personal experiences about obstacles they had faced or were facing.
By this description you might imagine several presenters speaking in front of an audience for
five hours -not a very exciting experience-, but being a Latino student myself, I found
most of the information presented there to be rather shocking and unbelievably inspiring. Every slide in the presentation showed a disappointing low number of academic achievement in Latino students; but trust me, there is nothing more motivating than someone telling you you can't do something-and I believe that was the point of the whole event; to annoy us, open our eyes, and force us to do something about it.

It is for this reason that I highly encourage students to attend future Latino Summits. More importantly though, I encourage students to set higher goals for themselves, to go to college, and to turn those statistics around and set high standards for future Latino generations.

Community gathers to clean the environment
by Martin Zazueta

Every year the the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park gets packed with all sorts of trash that flows down from Tijuana during the rainy season, causing devastating damage to the valley's plant and animal life. The worst part is that the trash and raw sewage comes every year due to the geographic settings of Tijuana, which is located at a higher elevation than southern San Diego causing a water runoff: all the sewage of Tijuana comes in causing the river valley to fill up with tires, bottles, styrofoam, and countless other junk that flows in from Tijuana. To combat the problem Wildcoast, an environmental non-profit organization based in Imperial Beach, has been working to get community support to help clean-up the Tijuana River Valley, and that's just what they've accomplished.

Dr. Arias, Southwest High's engineering teacher, coordinated with Wildcoast to have the cleanup project director, Paloma Aguirre, to give a Powerpoint presentation to SOH students in which they were made aware or reminded of the severe crisis that has plagued the river valley. Many students were shocked at the large extend of the problem. One student stated: “I knew it was dirty there, but not that dirty”. At the end of the presentation Ms. Aguirre had the teachers assign the students a letter to write to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to urge for more federal support of the issue. She also had a call to action inviting the students to come on Saturday October 24, 2009 from 9a.m.-12 p.m. to the last clean up of the year before the rain comes back.

With this call to action Ms. Aguirre stated “Because Southwest is so close, and is in fact the closest school to the River Valley, I think it's important that the Southwest High community leads the way in our efforts”

So, last Saturday that's exactly what happened: at least 20 SOH community members went out to clean-up the trash. Seniors such as Football player Carlos Troche and Academic Decathlete Joseph Dancel came to put in their part, while at the same time were earning community service hours for graduation and for college applications. Even Freshmen showed up to do their part. Dr Arias showed up as well and speeded up the trash collections by going on the trails with his truck to collect filled bags, tires and any other big pieces of collected trash.

Apart from SOH, several other high schools from throughout the county such as High Tech High, and members from several universities came to help out the community. At the event there were well over 100 people cleaning up the River Valley. But even with these people helping, a greater effort across the board is needed from the Sweetwater District board.

Pearl QuiƱones, board member of the Sweetwater Union High School District was also present on Saturday and was also shocked at the sight of all the trash saying that “this is just something one has to see for themselves to understand the magnitude”. Ms. QuiƱones says that she plans to have Ms. Aguirre give a presentation to the rest of the Board and hopes to champion an effort to have the Sweetwater District involve all the schools and organize a monthly cleanup project for this “affects all of us directly”.

Well even though the problem is far from solved, the wheels are in motion to generate a bright clean future, the question is whether you'll “make it happen, watch it happen, or wonder how it happened”, and is this case, only the those making it happen are needed. If your interested in making things happen, you can do your part by volunteering at Wildcoast events, or with any other non-profit organization, you can also write a letter to any of your area's elected officials urging them to take action.
